Honey is a combination of food and medicine given to us by nature. Medicinal uses of honey date back 8,000 years. Its potency in fighting against germs has even pushed back antibiotics.
What we do know is that with continued use of antibiotics, bacteria acquire the ability to fight against them. But all these years they have not been able to do anything against Honey’s ferocity.
Honey has long been used for many skin diseases, to prevent infection at the wound site and to heal wounds quickly. Honey prevents germs from growing and multiplying at the wound or sore site. Medicinally, honey is used in many ways such as skin diseases, burns, psoriasis, itching, various types of ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers, post-surgery scars.
Honey-producing flowers and bees’ body fluids contain natural chemicals that fight bacterial infections. Certain chemicals are also formed during the chemical processes that collect the honey in the hive and make it usable. Honey is 85 percent naturally sweet tasting, high in alkalinity and water molecules. Microorganisms in the honeydew area lose moisture quickly and cannot survive for long.
While collecting and processing honey from flowers, bees produce from their bodies a chemical called ‘defensin-1’, which kills bacteria, and a chemical called ‘MGO,-methyglyoxa-1’, which kills other microorganisms.
There are many clinical studies to fight and destroy the corona virus. Honey kills the immune cells in the body and helps to generate new cells. It also flushes out toxins caused by germs.
Reduces inflammation in the digestive tract. Honey has the ability to promote the growth of good bacteria in the colon and cure mouth ulcers, gastric ulcers caused by H pylori bacteria, constipation and many more. Increases secretion of the appetite suppressing hormone ‘ghrelin’. It boosts the ‘melatonin’ hormone which gives good sleep.
Although there are many amazing benefits such as reducing bad cholesterol, keeping blood pressure under control, preventing cancer cells from growing, and regulating blood sugar levels, very rarely, eating honey can aggravate asthma in some people. Studies have also shown that diarrhoea, dizziness and irregular heartbeat can occur. Consume 15-30 ml of honey daily.
